Alex Moulton New Series With Thun Belt Drive Bentley

⭕ Alex Moulton Belt Drive New Series bicycle. This bike is virtually identical to a Bentley belt drive Moulton New Series, but it does not have any Bentley badges or stickers, so Im not stating its a Bentley model. It is a separable space frame, made with Reynolds 531 tubing. It is a quite unusual space frame Moulton. In addition to the Thun belt drive it has the classic Moulton 17 (32-369) wheels. You can look at the bike and tell it was designed for 17 wheels, the fork and rear swingarm are very different to the standard 20 wheel New Series bikes. It has the New Series 70mm spaced front hub and 135mm spacing on the rear hub. The front wheel has crossed spokes that have been tied and soldered. There is a threaded split in the right rear stay for the belt to fit through. The belt drive is a Thun system that uses a V belt. It has a Sturmey Archer Sprinter 7 speed internal gear hub. The belt drive system looks to be new and I really dont think the bike was ridden much. I have been told that Moulton only made three of these bicycles, but cannot verify that. However, it is an extremely rare and unusual Moulton bicycle. The serial number is 9911XX, which I believe means its the second bike made in the 11th week of 1999. It has a stainless steel Moulton rear rack and a like new Brooks B-17 leather saddle. The Moulton wishbone stem is the longer version, as is the titanium seat post. It has Moulton mosquito handlebars. The crankset is a Shimano Dura Ace with the chainring replaced by a V belt pulley. The headset is Dura Ace as well, brakes are Shimano 105.

If your plan is to use this bike as-is, be advised the bike is probably best suited for a collector. While the belt drive system works well, the plastic rear pulley/gears did not have a reputation for long life. The original Wobler / Moulton 32-369 tires are on the bike. They should be replaced if you are going to ride the bike as they are starting to show age cracks. The bike has just been serviced. With the exception of the tires its ready to ride.

If you dont want it for its collectible significance, this bike has quite a bit of potential. With the 17 wheels, it would be a great riding bike and would pack in less space than a 20 New Series. There is just something about a Moulton with 17 wheels that is hard to quantify but most would agree they have a superior feel to the 20 wheels.

This Alex Moulton New Series with 17 wheels and belt is one of the rarest Moultons ever made. The bike is in very good condition, the paint is good but has a few nicks and scratches. No bent or damaged tubes. The bike can be shipped anywhere in the world! Please email with any questions.
