CRAMPTON 5 Inch Gauge Live Steam Train

⭕ Hello and welcome to this sale for a very rare model of a CRAMPTON 5-inch gauge live steam locomotive.

Believed to be one of only a handful of its type in the country, this particular model was built several years ago by my late uncle, Ken Ellwood, a much respected member of the West Cumbria Guild of Model Engineers. A prolific builder, having built literally dozens of locos and traction engines over the past 60 years, Ken built his engines to be used and enjoyed on the track, rather than admired under a glass case !, to this end, he entered many efficiency trials with his locos and was much revered by other engineers due to his many consecutive class wins.

To my knowledge, Ken acquired this particular model as a box of bits, from one of his old friends who had sat, looking at the task of building such a complex loco for several years, before consigning it to the back of the workshop as a no can do.

After building the boiler, and machining the many missing parts from scratch, Ken managed to complete the build, and ran the loco regularly over several years on the WCGME track at Curwen Park in Workington.

The loco has sat in the workshop unused for the past 3 years due to long term illness, and as such I would assume the relevant certificates will have expired, however, for those of you in this field, acquiring new ones should be no problem.

You can see from the pictures the good condition of the loco and fully operational tender. The complex and unconventional wheel/cylinder arrangement is truly a marvel of engineering in miniature. Overall length when coupled to tender is 4 feet, in terms of weight, one man can manage to lift the loco if necessary, although obviously 2 pairs of hands makes it easier!
