1984 PAXMAN 20MGD DOUBLE FRENCH HORN

⭕ SUPERB 1984 PAXMAN MODEL 20MGD DOUBLE HORN.

Medium bell, gold brass, detachable bell flare, lacquered, very fine original condition, but with new lacquer finish.

Paxman produces basically three full double horns.

The model 20 was designed in the 1960s by London horn virtuoso Richard Merewether. Its still in production, has been a best seller for us for three decades.

Paxmans model 25 is basically the same horn as the 20, but with slightly larger bore size to the F side of the horn.

Their model 23 is a more recent design, the work of London Symphony Orchestra hornist Timothy Jones. The model 23 incorporates the same change-valve configuration of the Merewether system, but with a different wrap: more like a Knopf or Geyer.

The M bell (medium) is popular in England and France, is still the choice of many pro players all over the world.

Paxmans L (large) bell has become the most popular with American players. Both the spout and the tail of the bell are wider than on the M-belled horns.

Paxmans E (European) bell has also been well-received by American musicians. The bell is a compromise between the L and M bells.

Paxmans A (American) bell, is loosely based on that found on an Elkhart 8D or a pre 1940s Kruspe Horner. Its wider at the spout, yet more narrow at the tail or napkin ring. This bell has been well received by players who are more accustomed to 8D horns.

When the A bell was introduced at Paxman, in the late eighties, the decision was made to discontinue the X bell.
