Nagra DII Digital Audio Magnetic Tape Recorder

⭕ This item is being relisted because the previous buyer did not pay for his purchase.

This is a virtually new Nagra DII digital audio tape recorder. It has never been titled, and is complete with the original packaging, documentation, cables. . . everything you see in the pictures, including the optional 7-inch reel cover assembly.

Specific options incorporated into this particular DII include the ND-HSF 96kHz sampling option, the ND-TC time code option, and the ND-IL-2 symmetrical line input option. In the pictures you will see the ND-PCA RS-232 / RS-422 adapter, the NADCOM Windows ND-SNCW software CD, and the SMPTE time code input / output cable.

The final factory test measurements report for this specific serial number, dated Feb. 24, 2005, contains all Nagra -- measured performance parameters at the time of shipment. This includes specific color graphs which showcase the remarkable specifications. Signal to noise ratio, for example, is shown to exceed 110db.

The Nagra DII represented I believe the final -- and arguably the best -- of their long history of splendid magnetic tape audio recorders. Obviously Nagra has continued to do quite well since then, with solid state recorders. But theres something really special about this DII design. . . perfectly embodied in this finest possible example. My notes show Nagras readout parameter of measured Headtime at 27.9 hours use as of January 10, 2006. I have added perhaps an hour or two since then. I believe I read that Nagra -- as part of their final inspection before it leaves the factory -- tested each unit for 24 hours; if so, that would account for virtually all usage. Nagras lifetime specification for the heads is nominally 1,500 hours.

The four head scanner (2-record & 2-play) allows read after write which can be heard through the two level-adjustable headphone outputs. The longitudinal tracks (CUE & Time Code) give flexibility of operation and additional features never before seen in a professional recorder.

I have looked all over this recorder and did not find any scratches or other cosmetic issues; nothing to harm its appearance. I do not believe the 7-inch reel cover assembly was ever installed, and it still has remnants of the clear plastic over it to protect during shipping. While the internal battery does charge up, I would recommend replacing it before any serious use.
