A violin, made by MAX WILLABALD SCHMIDT ~ VIOLIN - MAKER ~ OAKLAND CALIF. ~ anno Di feb. 1918 . This is how it is written, hand burned on the inside. I took this violin to world renowned Gary Vessel,a maker and expert and had him do a few minor repairs, new sound post , new pegs, J810-40225 VLN STG SET-PRELUDE 4/4, PLAY CONDITION, Bow Rehair, restring - play test.The sound when played was so wonderful it brought tears to my eyes.Still has the original Spirit VARNIS finish. The bow, a ALBERT NURNBERGER bow no less,probably older than the violin. The violin has had a sound post crack repaired a long long time ago,one oval and two diamond shaped inlays, possibly repaired by Max himself,reason?,first the quality of workmanship,and there is another mark inside the violin, A.E.19,this also is burned it could be a mark done when repaired, A.E. a repair code lettering,19, the year?,And the violin was 92 years later found less than 200 miles from where it was made. The bow, Straight and a perfect curve,only Gary noticed, had been spliced also a long time ago, done so well you almost cannot tell, again superb workmanship, Max was born in Germany 1886/7, arrived in U.S. 1912,naturalization date 1913, in the San Francisco area, moved to Seattle in 1920. retired in Boise, worked until his death,in 1946, made over 50 instruments incl. several very nice cellos, mainly did repairs. Learned making at Markneukirchen in Germany,made his own version of a Guarneri model,Many hand signed burned into the inside.Info. from the Violin Makers of U.S by Thomas Wenberg.
