EDWARD VII'S SOLID GOLD & GEM SET CIGARETTES CASE 1896 - Antiques - By Owner


⭕ Made of 9ct solid gold,and rectangular in form,with a curved profile,hinged convex lid,and convex reverse.
The lid is decorated with chased technique to depict scrolling foliage,and is set with 80 gemstones, comprising 59 rose cut diamonds,7 x sapphires,6 x emeralds,& 8 x rubies.The push button clasp is also set with a large oval cabochon sapphire.
The reverse side is very finely engraved with the British Royal Coat of Arms,incorporating the Sovereigns Crown.
Although assayed in 1896,and baring French assay marks,this cigarettes case is presumed to have been the property of King Edward VII,the Art Nouveau style chased decoration,gem stone settings and Armorial bearings,being added circa 1905.
Clearly marked to each side with French assay marks,and English assay marks;

Date letter a for 1896.
Makers mark FE for Frederick Edmonds.
The right hand bottom edge is marked with the retailers name & address;
PERCY EDWARDS & CO. 71 & 72 PICCADILLY.
The cigarettes case is stored within a fitted presentation box, with black leather cover,hinged lid with brass push button clasp,white silk lined lid,and beige velvet fitted base.
Length:8.9 cm / 3 4/8 inches.
Width:7.5 cm / 2 7/8 inches.
Weight:87 grams / 2.79 troy ounces.
With one small chip to one emerald,and a few light surface dints.Otherwise in excellent condition.
