⭕ George Nakashima Black Walnut conoid bench with hickory spindle back and laurel wood arm rest. The impressive bench measures 14 long , 34 high and 31 deep. The back of the free edge seat is signed by the artist in script George Nakashima 1962. The bench has remained in the same Borie family since it was built. Architect James H. Borie of Yardley, Pennsylvania collaborated with George Nakashima on the details of the bench. The original design sketch, canceled checks as well as Nakashima signed correspondences document this collaboration. After extensive research we feel that this spindle back bench is the largest offered at public auction in the past decade. Furniture designer George Nakashimas (1905-1990) exquisite creations merged traditional woodworking techniques with innovative design, resulting in work that demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship coupled with a reinterpretation of modernist design. Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington, raised in Seattle, and traveled and worked in France, Japan, and India in the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, he was incarcerated at Minidoka and was released in 1943 to relocate to New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he established his studio. His commissions include furniture for the home of former New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
